IMPACT REPORT: Gems of Bollywood’s Crackdown and Force-Edits in Anti-Hindu Content

WHAT WE DID

1. Laxmii (formerly Laxmmi Bomb, 2020)
– GoB raised objections to the title Laxmmi Bomb, linking “bomb” with Goddess Lakshmi, for a film to be released during Diwali, and portrayal of a character possessed by “Laxmi” carrying trishul in red saree.

Impact:

– Multiple Hindu organisations amplified GoB’s objections, leading to change before release.Within 20 days, producers renamed film from Laxmmi Bomb to Laxmii.

– GoB also raised grave objections to the film’s content after release. The film bombed.

2. Tandav (Amazon Prime, 2021)

– GoB exposed objectionable portrayal of Lord Shiva and anti-Hindu political undertones in the web series.

Impact:

– FIRs filed in UP and Maharashtra over objectionable depiction of Hindu deities.

– Director Ali Abbas Zafar and team issued public apology, acknowledging hurt caused.

– Amazon India’s content head and show creators faced criminal cases.
GoB’s early spotlight drove widespread outrage, making Tandav one of the first big OTT cases of religious sentiment accountability.

3. Shreyas Talpade Film Scene (Feb 2023)

– GoB flagged a scene showing the actor deliberately kicking Om symbol.

Impact:

– Shreyas Talpade issued public apology

– GoB’s acknowledgement of apology reinforced accountability model for Bollywood actors.

– Created a precedent where individual actors began responding directly to objections.

4. OMG 2 (July-Aug 2023)

– GoB consistently criticised portrayal
of Akshay Kumar as Lord Shiva linked to sex education and masturbation themes. Demanded Dharmic review panel before release.

Impact:

– Priests (e.g., Mahakaleshwar temple priest) raised objections, echoing GoB’s concerns.

– Public petition against film’s release gained momentum after GoB posts.
CBFC issued ‘A’ certificate with 25+ modifications (Aug 2023), including removal/alteration of references to Shiva, Draupadi, Raas Leela, and sexual content.
