In 1986 film Karamdaata, a character named Govinda, played by Mithun Chakraborty, tries to wake up Pinky (Amrita Singh) while his mother is doing aarti in front of Hindu deities. Pinky throws a tantrum, breaking many things in their house while Govinda’s mother frantically continues to recite the aarti.
The casual use of aarti in this scene is reminiscent of several scenes in Bollywood films such as in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, where the mood of aarti is ‘fun’, but scenes with namaz are serious.
